A grandmother from Little Sutton celebrated her 60th birthday last year with a fundraiser for the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Elaine Clarke celebrated her birthday in October with a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and asked her friends and family to make a donation to the Special Care Baby Unit at the Countess where her grandson Oliver was cared for after he was born prematurely at 28 weeks in May 2011, weighing 2 lbs 8 oz.

He subsequently spent 11 weeks on the unit before being allowed to go home just before his actual due date, weighing 4 lbs 10 ozs.

Elaine was thrilled that she was able to raise £3,000 which was split between the Babygrow Appeal and the Neonatal Unit.

Elaine said “I never expected to raise so much. I had hoped I might raise £500 but have just been overwhelmed by everybody’s generosity.”

Elaine visited the hospital in December with Oliver and his mum to bring the donation and meet some of the staff who looked after Oliver and the family a few years ago.

As Elaine and Katie both said: “We couldn’t have asked for happier little boy and we have much to thank the wonderful staff here at the Countess for. We are so pleased to hand over this donation as we know it will be used to help other families like us”.
