SPOTTY Dalmatians, caped super heroes and swashbuckling pirates leaped from the pages of picture books into Helsby classrooms last week.

To celebrate World Book Day on March 1, schools and nurseries across Helsby were filled with children’s favourite characters from novels, poems, comics and short stories as they brought literature to life.

Infants and toddlers spent the week dressed as Where’s Wally?, Little Red Riding Hood and Shaun the Sheep, before enjoying a teddy bear hunt and teddy bears picnic in the glorious sunshine outside Helsby Preschool, on Chester Road.

Staff at the preschool, who spent the week dressed as Dalmatians and Indians, said the two- to five-year-olds had wanted to spend the whole week celebrating their favourite books.

“We made our own biscuits and gingerbread men, and then had a picnic in the sunshine,” said Liz Middleton, who works at the preschool.

“The glorious sunshine was the perfect way to end the week, tomorrow we are having a pyjamas day, we have been dressing up all week so it seems right to dress down.”

Meanwhile, staff and children at Helsby Horns Mill Primary School dressed up as Harry Potter, witches and wizards to celebrate the literary day with a school parade.
