THE annual Trees of Light service at the Countess of Chester Hospital takes place on Friday.

More than 700 people will be remembered by friends and family who have sponsored a light in their memory.

All funds raised are used to improve care and support given to patients and relatives at a time of bereavement. During this year the appeal has contributed to the development and refurbishment of the hospital's spiritual care centre (formerly the chapel) where the Books of Honour are permanently displayed.

A bespoke concealment unit is also being purchased and further funds have been used for staff bereavement training.

The public are invited to attend the service which will be led by Rev John Kingsley, head of chaplaincy services at the hospital, starting at 6pm.

The theme for this year's service is 'peace' with several readings undertaken and carols sung before the lights are switched on by Chester Childbirth Appeal Director Pat Daniels MBE.

'Mrs Daniels was one of the original members of our bereavement group, and she has done an incredible amount of voluntary fundraising in recent years to support the hospital, so we felt it entirely appropriate that we ask her to switch on the lights this year,' said fundraising manager Janet Ratcliffe.
