LIBERAL Democrat council leader Paul Roberts believes Chester Conservatives have set up an anti-Lib Dem website to undermine his group.
ButtheToriessay thespoofLibDem site is by a local Conservative activist and does not have the official backing of the association.
The blog, which concentrates almost solely on attacking the Lib Dem-led ruling coalition on Chester City Council, is headed 'an angry Cestrian has had enough! and no I am not a Lib Dem' but the only name mentioned briefly on the site is 'George Peters'.
Cllr Roberts - who wins a 'Pork Pie' award on the site for the best use of spin - said: 'It is clearly some kind of dirty tricks campaign - we assume from the Conservatives but we don't know - to try and attack us with whatever rubbish someone feels appropriate to write.
'Presumably they are too embarrassed to put it out under their own name.'
He added: 'I'm not sure if I was trying to identify 'George Peters' that I would have to look that far.'
Cllr Roberts said the website was professionally put together by someone with competent IT skills.
'It's an irritation but I have more important things to do than worry about Mr Peters or whatever name he normally goes under.'
Cllr Roberts said he would continue to keep an eye on the site in case of libel issues but said the trouble with the internet was it was difficult to trace the author.
'If someone is trying to get their message across in that way then it makes them very sad. I prefer to maintain the high ground with such things and be accountable for what I say.'
Cllr Roberts said: 'Comment is free andthe realityis, ifyou aregoingtobe involved in politics, you are going to be attacked.'
Conservative spokesman Simon Harris said: 'It is by one of our activists, mainly as a joke. It doesn't purport to be a Lib Dem site and there is a link through to the real site.
'It was set up by an activist in response to a website set up by the Lib Dems claiming to be a pro-David Cameron site when it was highly critical of David Cameron and made to look like a Conservative site.'
Mr Harris, who admitted supplying information for the site - www.chesterlibdems.co.uk/ - said 'George Peters' was not the real name of the author and denied he was someone with a high ranking position in the local association.
