A team of four students from The King’s School has reached the regional final in a national investment competition.

George Thompson, 17, of Chester, Charlie Bosworth, 16, of Ellesmere Port, Ben Johnson, 17, of Nantwich and Elliott Horsburgh, 17, of Tarporley represent the school’s fourth successive year in achieving a place in the regional finals.

The ‘Team Very Good’ team, who were competing against more than 30,000 other students across the UK in the ifs Student Investor Challenge, made nearly £10,000 trading in virtual shares in just three months of trading, outperforming the FTSE 100 share index in the process.

Team captain, George Thompson said: "We're extremely pleased to have made it this far. The opportunity to trade in the stock market has given us a real insight into the dynamic financial world. We are hoping to continue our success at the regional final.”

They will now represent King’s at the North Wales & English Midlands regional final, held in Birmingham on March 19.

If successful at this stage, students will have the opportunity to make it through to the national final in April where an all expenses paid educational trip to New York and £2,000 for the school is up for grabs.

The free to enter competition, run by ifs University College and supported by Bloomberg, provides teams with £100,000 of virtual money to buy and sell shares in FTSE 100 companies. The competition gives teams of four students aged between 14 to 19 years old the opportunity to experience the dynamic world of share dealing and investing in the stock market.

Alison Pask, vice principal at ifs University College said: “This competition gives students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of making investment decisions, which will benefit them throughout their lives when making financial choices. This is a real achievement and many congratulations go to the team from the King’s School.”
