Former Chester City boss Kevin Ratcliffe has paid tribute to Howard Kendall - a manager he said was ahead of his time.

Everton's greatest ever manager passed away on Saturday morning aged 69 following a heart-attack.

Ratcliffe was captain during the Everton's finest era during the mid-1980s when the club ruled at home and abroad.

"As a manager of his generation, he was forward thinking," said Ratcliffe, who managed Chester from 1995 to 1999.

"His training methods, for me, were as good as I've ever seen.

"He made training enjoyable and you wanted to come in and work with him.

"He was a hard task-master and when you didn't do things right he made you pay, literally.

"But these were all the attributes that made him a great manager."

Kendall left Everton in 1987 but would return for two more spells in the 1990s.

"It was disappointing that Howard was not manager of Everton during that period for longer," added Mancot-born Ratcliffe.

"I am sure that if Howard had stayed at the club during that spell then the football club would have carried on the success the club had during the 80s."

Kendall joined Everton as a player in 1967 from Preston North End becoming one of the 'Holy Trinity', alongside Alan Ball and Colin Harvey in midfield. Kendall won the league with Everton in 1969-70, before going on to captain the Toffees.

He also played for Birmingham City, Stoke and Blackburn Rovers.

Kendall managed Everton in three separate spells, joining them from Blackburn in 1981 and leaving in June 1987 after winning the league championship twice, the FA Cup, the Charity Shield on three occasions and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

He returned to the club in 1990 for a three-year spell before a final one-year spell in 1997. He also managed Blackburn, Manchester City, Notts County and Sheffield United, as well as spells abroad with Athletic Bilbao, Xanthi and Ethnikos Piraeus.

He leaves behind a wife, Lil, and three children, Hailey, Lisa and Simon.
