Jenna  Downing, world’s number one female inline skater and ten times British champion, delivered two different sessions at Abbey Gate College as part of the college’s links with the Sky Sports mentoring programme.

Initially, Jenna spoke to the Lower Sixth students about her story and her ‘never give up’ approach that has been required in such a male dominated sport and how as a result she was able to turn professional at only 12 years old.

Jenna also made them aware of the sacrifices she had to make to complete both her law degree and also to compete at such a high level.

After communication and leadership tasks were duly completed Jenna equalled her world’s best by jumping over seven pupils!

After school Jenna ran a master class for 9 pupils who have some experience on skates and they covered a variety of techniques. After winning the trust of the pupils Jenna once again jumped over most of the group, which was a bit easier than her 960 degree competition twists.

Last year saw Doncaster Belles and BBC football pundit Sue Smith and Paralympian cyclist Rik Waddon visit the college in order to offer advice and guidance to pupils.

In 2 weeks’ time Olympic female boxer Natasha Jonas will also be visiting to emphasise that participation in sport is wide ranging and all of these athletes tell personal stories that are an inspiration to us all.

The college would like to extend its thanks to all of the visiting athletes who are helping to ensure that the numerous gifted and talented athletes throughout the college receive the very best guidance and motivational training.
