A man who tried to gouge out the eye of a Cheshire police officer has been sentenced to 20 weeks in prison following the violent attack.

James Cross, 29, of Lyndale Court, Winsford, became aggressive as two officers attempted to restrain and arrest him for being drunk and disorderly after they had responded to reports of two men fighting on Winsford High Street.

Despite officers trying to reason with him, Cross lashed out and bit one officer on the arm before trying to gouge at his eye, causing bleeding, bruising and reddening.

Cross then attacked another officer, which resulted in minor scratches and cuts to their arms and leg.

Despite the injuries, officers managed to restrain Cross who was arrested and later sentenced at Crewe Magistrates Court yesterday (Monday, June 27).

Chief Inspector Simon Meegan said: “This was a vicious attack by Cross on officers after they responded to a 999 call for assistance.

“Thankfully both officers are recovering well and the custodial sentence reflects the severity of his actions.”
