THE A49 was littered with stranded and overturned vehicles on Thursday after a jackknifed lorry closed the road for 11 hours.

At 4am on August 12 an articulated lorry jackknifed between the Red Fox at the A49/A51 traffic lights and the A49/A534 at Ridley.

The lorry was left blocking the carriageway in both directions.

The police were called and a recovery team arrived to rescue the stranded lorry. The removal of the jackknifed lorry should have taken around an hour but as the recovery vehicle tried to lift the lorry back into position, it tipped over crashing onto its side next to the lorry.

Luckily nobody was injured as a result of the incident, but it caused more problems for the recovery team.

Motorists on their way to Crewe, Nantwich and to join the M6 also faced long delays as they had to negotiate smaller rural roads to get past.

A larger crane was then called out to remove both vehicles from the carriageway. Eventually they were able to remove both vehicles from the scene and police were able to reopen the road at 3pm- 11 hours after the lorry had jackknifed.

Police spokeswoman Shelley Williams said: “Every effort was made by police and other agencies to safely and quickly facilitate the removal of both vehicles.”
