A SCHEME that gives people the chance to cut the cost of travelling to work has been launched in Ellesmere Port.

Workwise Wheels means those living in Westminster, Wolverham, Stanlow, Grange and Central wards will be able to borrow a bicycle to help make their daily commute easier and cheaper.

Workwise Wheels is one of a series of projects being introduced by the Local Employment Strategies Partnership to help residents benefit from new job opportunities being created in Ellesmere Port's Economic Development Zone (EDZ) over the next two years.

The EDZ is the area running along either side of the M53 motorway where, thanks to investment from European funding and the North West Development Agency, new office, warehousing and light industrial premises and job opportunities are being created.

Michelle Hope, EDZ employment co-ordinator, said: 'This is the first of a wide range of projects to be launched over coming months to help ensure that Ellesmere Port residents benefit from these marvellous new opportunities.'

Rhian Lewis, Workwise officer, said: 'This new scheme will not only help people get to work when perhaps other local transport methods are expensive or do not run at the right time, but it also helps you get fit.'

The bikes for the project were bought from Big Bill's Bikes in Ellesmere Port market.

Other Workwise projects are already helping people travel to work, interviews, training and education through the Scooter Commuter and Travelcard schemes.
