A VILLAGE institution is fighting for its life.
But supporters of Christleton Institute, known locally as the ‘Stute’, are hoping it will now continue to serve the village for years to come.
The club has been part of Christleton life for 80 years but its future was under a cloud in the summer when the need for cost savings raised its head.
Management committee member David Parry says the committee is now planning how to meet the expectations of the Stute’s trustees for savings and the creation of a surplus to meet repair and refurbishment costs.
“In April, the trustees will receive a report on our progress and then make a new decision about the Stute’s longterm future,” said Mr Parry.
Decisions which have already been taken include applying for a premises licence which will allow extended opening hours and make it possible to arrange a full programme of social and community activities and for a lottery licence which will permit fundraising activities such as raffles.
Changes to the club rules will see local club members and visiting teams automatically given associate membership on arrival.
From January some voluntary staffing of the bar is to be introduced, initially involving local licensees Andy Sloan at the Ring O’Bells in Christleton and Alex Blythin at Rowton Poplars Hotel & Restaurant.
Eight members have also volunteered and the Stute says their offers are ‘greatly appreciated’.
Revised membership rates will take effect from April 2008 based on £10 per person and £9 for pensioners.
Lettings charges for groups wanting to hire the premises will also be displayed.
“The committee is now working on a full programme of social activities which will hopefully attract the many new members that have joined over the past six months,” added Mr Parry.
“There are also plans to refurbish the lounge bar and nearly £5,500 has been raised or pledged to help finance the renovations.”
The Stute says, however, that more is needed and any donations can be sent to the treasurer at 4 Sandrock Road in Christleton.
It is also seeking contact details for anyone who is able to supply carpets, curtains and pub furnishings.
