A little rainfall didn’t dampen spirits at this year’s Huxley and Hargrave Happy Days.
Stalls and side shows had to move the festivities over to a marquee where visitors enjoyed traditional f�te activities such as a tombola and cake stall.
Five floats left Huxley for the two-mile route to the Church Field in Hargrave, greeted by a very enthusiastic crowd.
And Rose Queen, Amelia Briscoe from Huxley was crowned by resident Margaret Coker.
Despite the rain, hundreds of people turned out to the two-day event which featured Maypole dancing by children from Huxley School, a demonstration by a party representing the City of Chester Militia, 1643-6, and a climbing wall manned by members of the Scouts.
The sunshine finally came out in time for the ‘sports for all’ competition in which both young and old had fun battling for glory.
On Sunday morning there was a celebratory Songs of Praise in St Peter’s Church, Hargrave, which was attended by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Hugo Deynem and Lady Mayoress, Debbie Deynham.
Afterwards guests enjoyed a village lunch served in the marquee.
Anne Smart, one of the organisers, described it as ‘a wonderful village event’.
“We had so many comments about the friendly and warm atmosphere at the fete despite the rain!
“And the credit for the whole weekend must largely go to the committee’s retiring chairman, Betty Manford, who had so ably led the organising committee throughout the year.”
