THE chief of Cheshire Constabulary has emphasised the force’s commitment to tackling those who defy the hunting ban.

In a web chat with the public last Thursday, Chief Constable David Whatton was asked if he could pledge support for anti-hunt protesters who seek to gather evidence against illegal hunts and are subject to hostility in the process.

He responded: “We uphold the law with our fear or favour and will deal fairly with anyone in any disagreements who break the law.”

He stressed the force had made 39 prosecutions in the 12 months ending in November 2010 and 37 in the 12 months ending November last year under the Deer Act 1991, Forestry Act 1967, Game Licences Act 1860, Ground Game Act 1880, Hares Preservation Act 1892 and Hunting Act 2004.
