Hundreds of people lined the streets of Chester in force to take part in a giant march in support of a cancer charity.

Chester was one of just 15 UK cities chosen to host the large scale ‘March On Cancer’ event, on Saturday, October 11, as part of Stand Up To Cancer, a joint fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.

It will raise money to fund vital research which will get new and better treatments to cancer patients faster.

Courageous Blacon cancer survivor Caireen Candlin played a big role in the event.

The mum-of-three took to the podium for the march – so marchers could see she is living proof of the value of research into cancer, which she was first diagnosed with cancer eight years ago.

Despite chemotherapy, further smears detected more cancerous cells and was forced to undergo more surgery, and after her experience, and the fact the 43-year-old lost her mum to cancer last month, Caireen was determined to show her fighting spirit at Saturday’s event.

The event started and finished at Grosvenor Park with participants following the path along the River Dee, passing Chester Racecourse and back under the ancient Roman City Walls, via the Town Hall Square.

Jane Bullock, Cancer Research UK’s spokesperson for Chester, said: “We are very grateful to Caireen for helping us to Stand Up To Cancer.

“The event was an amazing success and we’d like to say a huge thank you to the people of Chester for walking all over cancer and raising money to help save lives”

The live TV fundraiser on Channel 4 at 7.30pm on Friday 17 October, will be hosted by Davina McCall, Alan Carr and Dr Christian Jessen who will front a star studded night jam packed with programming from entertainment and science to documentaries - featuring some of Channel 4’s and the UK’s best loved talent and respected researchers.

Stand Up To Cancer first too place in the UK in 2012 and raised over £8 million for ground-breaking research.
