CHESTER once again became student central as hundreds flocked to the city’s Cathedral for the latest series of graduation ceremonies

Gowned and mortar-boarded graduates could be seen all over the city centre across a three-day period as the University of Chester staged a total of nine ceremonies.

Professor Tim Wheeler, the university’s vice-chancellor, congratulated all the graduates.

They were joined by eminent individuals, who each were awarded an honorary degree for outstanding achievements in their chosen fields.

Professor Wheeler said: “These qualifications symbolise all their tremendous accomplishments and the hard work and dedication they have given to their studies.

“We wish them all luck with their future as they leave to make their mark in the world.”

Among the celebrated names to receive honorary degrees was former Chester MP Christine Russell along with clinician and medical researcher Dr Clifford Kay and educationalist Hilary Tucker.

Distinguished Chester-born actor Ronald Pickup (currently starring in ITV1’s The Jury), human rights lawyer Jason McCue and disability champion David Thompson MBE received honorary degrees on Thursday.

And on Friday, it was the turn on the Rt Rev Donald Allister, Bishop of Peterborough, the Very Rev Peter Francis, warden at Gladstone’s Library, and actor, comedian, author and broadcaster Tony Robinson.

The next University of Chester graduation ceremonies are due to take place in March.
