Video and gallery: Hundreds of balloons released in memory of Whitby High pupil Oscar Phillips

Friends and family gather to remember teenager killed at Capenhurst Station last month

Hundreds of balloons soared high above Whitby on Friday, February 13, as the friends and family of teenager Oscar Phillips, tragically killed by a train at Capenhurst station last month, paid their respects.

The community turned out in force for the memorial at Whitby High School, where the 16-year-old was a sixth-form student.

Orange balloons were chosen as it was Oscar’s favourite colour.

Headteacher Bryn Heeley paid a heartfelt tribute to Oscar ahead of their release.

He said: “We release these balloons in memory of and respect for Oscar. A young man who has provided so many happy memories and thoughts for so many people.

“These memories and thoughts will remain with us all.”
