This week we launch a new regular column from Lynne Hamilton, fundraising manager events and community, at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in Backford. Each month she will bring you news, events and life stories as well as keeping you up to date on what the hospice is doing in your community.

  • In this job you get to meet some extraordinary people and I look forward to introducing you to some of them over the coming months.

I am the new fundraising manager at the hospice and fairly new to the Chester area so I am looking forward to finding my way round the city and meeting lots of Cestrians!

I was delighted to be part of the first meeting of Chester Business Babes, a group of Chester’s finest ladies in business. This was held at Bar Lounge and was a great introduction to the Chester social scene which so far looks pretty good to me.

If you aren’t feeling the Christmas love yet, you should nip into our office which is currently getting ready for the grotto at Gordale, so we are snowed under with toys and Santa suits for the Chester Santa Dash.

Hospice of the Good Shepherd to put on Festive Fun Friday

  • One of the biggest events in our calendar is the Light Up A Life service which is held on the River Dee at The Groves in Chester on Sunday, November 27 at 4.30pm. You can join us at a spectacular and moving service to remember and celebrate the lives of your loved ones.

The service will take place on the banks of the River Dee with music from Kelsborrow Choir and a performance from the Ellesmere Port Concert Brass.

During the service lilies adorned with flickering lights are gently floated on to the river, each one shining in memory of a loved one. You can purchase a lily or a memory star if you prefer. If you are unable to attend the service we can hang your star on the memory trees at the hospice. Your loved ones’ names will also be entered into the Book of Life, these may be viewed from December 14 until the end of January at the hospice.

At the service you will have the opportunity to join in singing Christmas carols and watch your candlelit lily float on the river in memory of your loved one. Mulled wine, mince pies and hot drinks and Christmas goodies will be available on the night. You do not have to have had a loved one cared for in the hospice for you to take part, the service is to celebrate the life of anyone you have lost.
