The Hospice of the Good Shepherd was chosen by the Hoole Allotment and Garden Association as the charity to benefit from their open day.

Members of the public were invited to come along and enjoy a leisurely tour of the allotments and meet local plot holders for gardening tips in return for a small entry fee.

A display of plants and jams and chutneys were available as well as the opportunity to find out how to become a member of HAGA, which is available to any plot holder or local gardener who is then entitled to purchase goods from trading huts.

The open day, which was supported by a number of local businesses including Lloyds Bank and visitors on the day, raised more than £1,000 which was presented to the Backford-based hospice.

Due to the interest from the local community, another open day and barbecue has been announced for Sunday, July 10 when the group has again selected the hospice to benefit from funds raised.

Community fundraiser for the hospice Justin Caroe said: “The open day organised by the HAGA was a huge success and everybody was warmly welcomed by the group. We are delighted they chose the hospice to help us raise much needed income and look forward to attending the next event in July.”
