A Chester war veteran is to receive a special award that pays tribute tohis service during the Second World War.

Deryck Fairhurst, 88, will be presented with the accolade at Chester Town Hall on Saturday, February 28, after French president Francois Hollande decided to award a number of veterans of the D-day and Normandy campaign with the Legion of Honour for services during the liberation of France in 1944.

Father-of-three Deryck, of Fieldway, Hoole, served with the Irish Guards Armoured Division and saw action throughout the D-Day and Normandy campaign, which included heavy fighting in Caen.

Lord Mayor of Chester Bob Rudd will be in attendance when Deryck receives what is the highest honour France can bestow.

Deryck’s son Derek told The Chronicle: “It is a big honour - and one I think is absolutely justified on the basis of my father’s dedication and commitment to duty.”
