Hoole is going for gold again in the Great British High Street Awards, still riding high from last year’s success.

The popular neighbourhood’s Faulkner Street and Charles Street scooped Best Newcomer – a category created especially for them – in 2015, after making the three-strong shortlist for Best Local Centre.

Now community group Notting Hoole, which was the driving force behind the last application, has revealed it is throwing its hat in the ring for the Best Local Centre category again.

The team has commissioned a video to be shot and produced by local film-maker Alicja Socha and featuring Hoole’s proud businesses and residents in support of this year’s bid.

Sue Mason, chair of Notting Hoole, explained their passion: “Hoole is a perfect blend of tradition and trend, and there are so many different facets, but they all come together to make an exciting, vibrant community.

“We are proud to represent Hoole and if we can do anything to help preserve that, we will.

“Too many high streets decay and stagnate, and we really need to get the message out that people have to work hard to reverse that trend.

“We are definitely stronger together.”

Along with the Best Newcomer award came a prize fund of £5,000, which Notting Hoole has been busy investing in the community through new and annual events like the May Day Street Festival, the Hoole Community BBQ and the much-loved Hoole Christmas Lights Switch-On.

The creative team has also produced a collection of Hoole-themed ‘bags for life’, which are on sale in shops throughout Hoole, to raise money for the Christmas lights and to promote the area.

Slogans include ‘There’s no place like Hoole, ‘Cool Hoole’ and ‘Hoole load of shopping’.

Notting Hoole treasurer Sam Jackson said: “One of the advantages of entering the Great British High Street Awards is that you are encouraged to come up with new ideas all the time.

“The judges suggested last year that we give Hoole a stronger brand, so after a brainstorming meeting we came up with ‘Hoole Life’ and the strapline ‘Eat, Shop, Stay’.

“We have a fantastic new logo designed by a very talented local graphic designer, which we are rolling out throughout the area on window stickers, posters, online, social media and a brand new tourist map of Hoole for local hotels and B&Bs, which has been designed by a very talented local artist.”

The awards, which are now in their third year, celebrate the great work being done to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets.
