Volunteers at Hoole Community Centre celebrated National Volunteers Week over a special lunch of homemade soup and cakes.

Over the last 12 months, volunteers have donated more than 3,000 hours in the café, helping people use computers, completing admin tasks and assisting with events which has resulted in huge benefits for the community.

Hobson’s Café, located within the centre, opened in September for two days a week. Now the café has a team of 28 volunteers signed up allowing it to open Monday to Thursday every week.

It’s estimated that more than 1,000 bowls of homemade soup have been served already.

Last week the gardening project got under way with large planters and troughs being filled with vegetables, herbs and salads that will be used and transformed into delicious dishes in the café.

The community library continues to thrive and free IT Buddy sessions are being held three times a week, aiming to encourage novice computer users to connect and enjoy using the internet and social media.

Sally Dobbing, volunteer co-ordinator, said: “There are lots of opportunities to get involved at the centre. It doesn’t matter if you only have a little spare time – all contributions are valuable. We want people to enjoy themselves and get something out of volunteering here. Without the volunteers we wouldn’t be able to provide any of these services for the community. They are amazing!”
