Cheshire Police have confirmed that a 34-year-old male scooter rider from Chester has died following a collision on Hoole bridge.

Hoole Road was closed to traffic for several hours following the fatal accident on Hoole Way, Chester, which happened on Sunday evening.

A police spokesperson said: "At 6.30pm on Sunday 22 February a road traffic collision occurred on Hoole Way, Chester, whereby a Peugeot scooter left the carriageway and was in collision with the railway bridge.

"A 34-year-old local male, who was riding, sustained serious injuries and died as a result of the collision.

"Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident 610 of 22 February."

Staff from nearby Indian restaurant Cafe Naj were 'sad' to report that customers had been speculating someone had died. Flashing lights from ambulances could be seen on the bridge when the road was closed.

Customers and staff at the Flookersbrook pub were also aware the bridge had been closed to vehicles and pedestrians although rail passengers had been allowed to access the steps leading down to the station. They were aware of rumours circulating that a motorcycle rider had died.

Earlier in the evening Chester Police tweeted: "Motorists please be aware of a road closure on Hoole Road, Chester. Please avoid the area. Ongoing police incident. Highways are aware."
