A home brew shop which once had links with Ellesmere Port has closed its doors for good.

Monique and Joop Van Berkum, who have run the Tranmere Home Brew Centre on Greenway Road for 30 years, are retiring.

The shop has been open since the 1960s.

“We’re both in our late sixties and unfortunately age catches up with you so the time has come to move on,” said Monique.

'End of an era'

“We have had shops in Heswall, Ellesmere Port and Wallasey in the past and this shop has been here for a long time so it’s the end of an era.”

The couple will continue to offer a home delivery service for customers who want to buy in bulk.

The shop employs one other part time worker, who is also retiring.

“I’ve got mixed feelings about finishing,” said Monique.

“It’s time for us to find new interests and I’m looking forward to reading more but I’ll miss the customers and the buzz you would get in the shop, particularly when the sales were on and it would be busy with people looking for bargains.”

The couple posted on their web site: “We are all young at heart but unfortunately there comes a time to call it a day.”
