HEALTHY children from Helsby Hillside Primary School are celebrating success after taking part in international Walk To School month.

Pupils in schools from all over the world, including Kenya, Spain and India, took part in events throughout October to promote walking to school.

Helsby Hillside School came top with lots of initiatives like walk to school diaries, posters and car sharing. Cheshire police visited the school to talk about safely walking to and from school.

Headteacher Craig Richardson said: “Supporting events like this is something I believe is really important.

“Children enjoy special events and special days and a focus on encouraging families to walk to school helps us not only address the healthy schools agenda, but also helps us deal with the congestion issues around school, parking problems and pupil safety.

“The children enjoy using the materials and our road safety officers made a presentation to assembly.”

The school was presented with a certificate rewarding the pupils for their effort during the scheme.

Cheshire West and Chester councillor Mark Ingram said: “The children have worked extremely hard.

“This was a time to think about getting to school in a different way, other than by car. The more cars we can get off the road, the better it is for everyone.

“Schools become safer without a lot of congestion, noise, air pollution and general chaos at start and finish times.

“Walking to school is an excellent way for children to get exercise, they can meet friends and guided by parents and carers they can learn about road safety.

“They arrive at school refreshed and ready for the day ahead.”
