A couple from Ellesmere Port were devastated when they cruelly received a cancer diagnosis just days before they were due to walk down the aisle – but then their ‘courageous’ little girl decided to do something extraordinary to help people like her mummy.

Beki Smith and Sam Kane were supposed to get married on September 24, but on September 13 Beki’s severe headaches led to her being rushed into intensive care at The Countess of Chester Hospital , where they learned she had an infection caused by leukaemia.

Sam said that the weeks which have followed have seen some of their darkest days, but their five-year-old daughter Isla has proved to be a ray of light.

Little Isla decided to donate her hair to help people like her mum who have lost theirs through cancer treatment

When the Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School pupil overheard her parents discussing Beki getting a wig made after the family took the step to shave her head, Isla resolved to donate a staggering 12 inches of her own hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which supports children who suffer hair loss due to cancer treatment.

“She’s a thoughtful little girl, really kind and caring,” said Sam.

“But she’s a girly girl and I never thought she would give her hair up, so for her to do this is inspirational.

“We have had some really dark times where we were wondering whether Becki would pull through.

“Knowing that Isla has got the courage to do this off her own back is amazing and it is such a big boost for Beki and I.”

Beki was diagnosed with leukeamia in September

Proud Sam added that their seven-year-old son Harvey has also been a tower of strength since his mum’s diagnosis.

Beki is due to start her second course of chemotherapy this week, and she and Sam – whose wedding has been put back for now – are full of praise for the ‘brilliant’ medical staff at The Countess.

“Doctors and nurses get a lot of bad press but I cannot fault a single thing they have done for us,” he said.

The family is also fundraising for the production of the wig.
