STUDENTS at Chester’s Hammond School have achieved a dramatic degree of success.

Eve Wilcox walked away with first prize at the Rotary Club of Chester’s poetry reading competition at the University of Chester. Eve competed with fellow Hammond students William Boyes and Amber Rose Evans in the contest where participants were required to read a poem of their own choice and a set poem written by Cheshire Poet Laureate W Terry Fox. Fox was a judge in the competition along with head of Abbeygate School Sue Fisher and Rotarian John Elsley of the Chester Literature Festival.

Drama students achieved further success in the Independent Schools Association Drama Festival when they won The Hollygirt Trophy for the best moment of theatre in a senior production during their performance of Ashputtel.

Still on stage at The Chester Festival of Speech and Drama, Alex Boden, Ruairi Campbell, Amber Rose Evans and Annie Schumacker all achieved top places in the contest which was held at Queen’s Park High School. They participated in a variety of classes including solo acting, solo mime, solo Shakespeare, verse speaking and sight reading.

In the final act of the drama sixth-former David Edwards has been offered a place at the prestigious National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. David, who starred as the Angel Gabriel in the 2008 cycle of Chester Mystery Plays, will travel to London in August for a two-week intensive acting course.
