VOLUNTEERS are being sought for the second phase of a project to reinvigorate the hedgerow in Vicars Cross.

Great Boughton Parish Council, who came up with the scheme last winter, are looking for help in laying the hedge on the A41 adjacent to the entrance to Dulverton field.

The work will take place from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday. Anyone wanting to help should turn up by 10am each day at the entrance to Dulverton Avenue amenity area.

A parish council spokeswoman said: “Tools are provided and training is given so why not come along and do an hour, or a day, or three – it’s up to you.

“It’s hard work, enjoyable and the results of your efforts will be seen for years.”

The original hedge had been laid about 35 years ago and was in a sorry state.

In January last year, a team of volunteers from British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), residents and local parish councillors spent four days laying hawthorn hedge as part of the first phase.

The hedgerow was adjudicated by The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) and the parish was one of only eight in Cheshire to be awarded a certificate for work on trees and hedges in a parish.

The spokeswoman added: “Many hawthorn hedges exist but hardly any are laid.

“It is hoped that within a year or two residents will notice a great improvement in the hedge’s appearance.”
