Budding hockey players from The Queen’s School in Chester enjoyed some top level coaching with Commonwealth Games silver medallist and England and GB hockey player Sam Quek.

Sam joined Queen’s own England international player, PE teacher Martine Green, ex-Welsh senior women’s goalkeeping coach Paddy Bingham and experienced PE teacher Sandy Littler for a day of elite training.

The pupils, from both the lower and senior schools, learnt about composure on the ball, keeping the ball under pressure, moving at speed and finding space in the morning.

At lunch the girls spoke at length to Sam about her experiences as a professional female athlete, her lifestyle and commitments. She explained the highs and lows of top level hockey and let the girls hold and be photographed with her Commonwealth Games silver medal.

In the afternoon the girls concentrated on either goal scoring or defending with both Mrs Green and Sam and they finished with a tournament.

Sam said after the visit that she enjoyed a great day training with some ‘awesome and amazing’ hockey girls.
