PUPILS across Vale Royal had a flaming good time learning about the dangers of fires last week.

Fire officers visited schools to promote Child Fire Safety Week.

Officers visited Verdin High School in Winsford on Thursday and Greenfields Primary School, Winsford, on Friday.

Sharon Goodhead, youth support officer for Cheshire Fire Service, said: 'We have been raising awareness of the dangers of hoax calls which is something that puts the lives of both children and adults at risk.

'We've been doing 'stop, drop and roll' this week where children learn how to react if their clothes catch fire. It's great fun, the kids absolutely love it.

'There's a serious side too. We home in on the need not to go back into a burning building and how to make a 999 call.'

Every year in the UK, about 30 children are killed and more than 900 are injured in accidental house fires, often because there is no smoke alarm or because there is an adult present who does not know what to do.

Child Fire Safety Week follows a Safety Town event in which youngsters are shown around a mock town with police and fire stations, a kitchen with hazardous materials and road crossings.

'They love going down the pole and really like finding out about everything,' added Sharon.
