Friends of a popular Chester teenager who died of cancer last year raised hundreds of pounds for charity in his memory.

Aidan Carroll, a popular former pupil of Bishops’ Blue Coat High School, passed away from the rare childhood cancer Ewing’s Sarcoma on December 13, only days after his 17th birthday.

He had previously spent a year bravely battling the disease, which began with a small tumour on his foot before it spread to his lungs.

Now, three months after his death, some of Aidan’s friends have raised more than £500 for Claire House Children’s Hospice from a special five-a-side football tournament held at Chester’s Goals Soccer Centre, where Aidan had run Carroll FC since he was 14.

Twenty-one teams got involved in the tournament, with Aidan’s former team coming out as the overall winners. The event was so successful that it is hoped the tournament will become an annual event.

Friends show support

Organiser Tom George, who regularly played alongside Aidan, said: “After knowing Aidan for so long and becoming friends with him I decided to host a tournament for his age group of 16-18 year olds. After weeks of preparation we managed to get 21 teams involved as well as Aidan’s parents, his friends’ parents and many of his friends to support it.

“I was delighted with the outcome of the event - it was one of our biggest turnouts and it raised £500 for Claire’s House."

And over the next few weeks, other charity events are to be held in Aidan’s honour, including a charity car wash held by some of Aidan’s friends at Sir John Deane’s College in Northwich, a Dads and Lads football match at Chester Nomads, a Chester Marathon attempt and some of Aidan’s friends will be taking part in the Pretty Mudder event this July.

Aidan’s mum Jenny said: “Aidan would be truly honoured and proud of his great family of friends who continue to be mine and Ian’s rocks through this unthinkable tragic situation.”
