CHESHIRE and Wirral Partnership NHS Trust has received the backing of the Department of Health for its application to become a foundation trust.
Peter Cubbon, trust chief executive said: 'This announcement demonstrates the confidence the Department has in our ability to provide high quality mental health, learning disability and drug and alcohol services.
'We are now just one step away from achieving foundation trust status which will secure a strong future.'
He added: 'Foundation Trust status will enable us to build on this solid achievement to enhance our services further.'
Foundation trusts are owned and controlled locally and are accountable to their communities.
David Eva, trust chairman, said: 'I can't emphasise enough how important it is to us to get people involved.
