FORMER footballers took on two Chester businesses to raise more than £1,500 for charity.

Ex-Manchester City and Chester FC players, including Eric Nixon and Eddie Bishop, beat staff teams from Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT) and building merchants Buildbase 2-0 in a game which raised a total of £1,622.63 for Macmillan Cancer Support, Beechwood Cancer Care Centre and Claire House.

The game, sponsored by CDHT, the Dodd Group, and Buildbase, was organised by the latter’s store manager Brian Potts and was the third annual charity event held at Chester FC’s Exacta Stadium.

Local businesses including the Cheshire Sandwich Company, electrical wholesalers Newey & Eyre and building and refurbishment company Biokil-Crown all donated to the event.

Mr Potts said he was pleased that the event raised ‘a significant total’ for charity.

He said: “Thanks to everybody involved, especially to Chester FC for providing the fantastic facilities and the players for giving up their time.”
