The casualty was treated by paramedics before the air ambulance landed to take them to hospital.

A backup fire engine has been provided for Frodsham while the vehicle is repaired. The A56 High Street has now been cleared, but it was closed in both directions after the accident.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Police were in attendance and the road closed as the incident was dealt with.

"Police and fire officers will be carrying out investigations.

"Although there is damage to the Frodsham fire engine a replacement for the station has been provided so there will be no loss of cover for the area."

There are still delays on the M56 after the crash westbound between junctions 12 and 14 at 9.40am.

An accident involving a coach and a van saw the bus leave the carriageway; the van driver suffered 'minor injuries'.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area which diverted many through Frodsham and Helsby via the A56, leading to heavy congestion in the town.
