A baby deer was rescued by firefighters from the canal in Chester city centre.

Two specially-trained members of a crew from Chester Fire Station went into the water, off Canal Street, to recover the deer about 6.15pm on Tuesday.

The animal was distressed and cold but otherwise unharmed. Firefighters wrapped the deer in blankets to keep it warm.

RSPCA staff are now looking after the animal at their Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich.
