Family historians had an update on research into family history.

Ellesmere Port Local and Family History Society enjoyed the talk from Hilary Watmough on the research she has done on her own family background.

Would-be and budding genealogists in the audience were surprised to find different ways of doing it including newspaper articles, church and parish records, coroner's inquest, military and probate records as well as talking to relatives and family friends.

Hilary suggested, however, they should always try and verify what is said as memory can play tricks.

Family photos should be carefully annotated on the back.

A tremendous amount of information can be found on the internet but researchers should beware as some companies will charge a considerable amount for finding records that can be had for a nominal fee direct.

Hilary has a long standing interest in family history and coordinates the Family History Group for Chester U3A.

The society’s next meeting is on Tuesday, March 18 at 7.30pm in the Tom Rolt Centre at the National Waterways Museum, preceded by the AGM at 7pm.

Di Skilbeck MBE will talk about the Boat Museum start-up.
