HUNDREDS of people will be backing a Crewe charity helping street children around the world when the West Street Christian Fellowship in Crewe holds its annual Christmas Celebration on Sunday.

The funds from the annual event at the Oakley Centre in West Street, Crewe, will go to the Mayor's Charity, The Railway Children, which helps a staggering 24,000 street children.

The mayor, Cllr Howard Curran, said: 'Every charity is important but I feel this year that The Railway Children covers a great worldwide problem that needs to be addressed.

'Therefore, I believe a good audience at this Christmas event in the Oakley Centre will be an ideal place to bring much needed capital for this scheme.'

The Railway Children charity was started by Crewe man David Maidment in 1995. On a business trip to Mumbai in India he was haunted by what he saw in the main railway station - a seven-year-old girl beating herself to elicit sympathy and money.

The charity now backs projects across the world, many helping children severely traumatised by their experiences.

Neil Smith, spokesman of the church, formerly the West Street Baptist Church, said: 'The Christmas celebration is always a wonderful event. There will be an exciting programme of drama, traditional carols and a guest choir from Beechwood Primary School in Crewe.'

Admission is free but a special collection will be held for The Railway Children. The event starts at 7pm. Free parking is also available in the Asda car park opposite the centre.
