Perfect strangers have rallied to smash a £100k target to fund life-saving cancer treatment for Upton five-year-old Erin Cross in just 24 hours – and the internet is awash with joy.

The estimated £100,000 cost to undergo the CAR T Cell Therapy – which is only available in the USA – was reached on Thursday night (June 10) in an extraordinary and overwhelming display of humanity.

Generous supporters soon took to social media to share their delighted reactions to the news that Erin is one step closer in the race to receive the pioneering treatment she needs.

Erin was first diagosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2012 and relapsed in March this year

Nikki A Booth wrote on The Chronicle's Facebook page: "This story really touched me I am so glad you have reached your target I wish you every success best wishes xxx"

Mandi Siddall added: "Really restores your faith in humanity, despite most people facing financial difficulties of their own....good luck tiddler, as well as the money pledged...I'm sure there will be many prayers and positive vibes."
