A PAINFULLY thin dog found dead in a lay-by could have been badly neglected for months, say the RSPCA.
It is thought the Weimaraner-type probably starved to death before being spotted by a passer-by on Salters Lane, Picton Gorse, near Hoole Village, Chester on Monday, February 1.
RSPCA inspector Leanne Cragg said: “This dog was awfully thin. He had an open wound on a leg that hadn’t been treated and was urine-stained and filthy.
“It doesn’t look like he’s been kept inside which, given his very poor bodily condition and the very cold weather, wouldn’t have been good. Sadly, it would appear he’s been very badly neglected in the weeks or months before his death.”
The dog is described as an entire, un-neutered adult male. He was not wearing a collar and ID tag or microchipped so at the moment there is no way of tracing his owner.
Ms Cragg added: “We believe the body was dumped on Monday morning as there was no frost on it, despite the weather conditions overnight. We want to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area or who recognises the dog as belonging to someone they know.”
