A VALUED community centre’s reopening has been made possible thanks to a £60,000 funding grant.

Elton Community Centre has had its worn-out roof completely replaced while new football changing rooms were installed.

The community centre committee, in collaboration with the Elton Village Fete committee, has now held its official reopening.

The community centre committee received nearly £60,000 of match funding from Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) and Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC). Other contributions have come from within the community and from the parish council.

A committee spokesman said: “[This is] only the first phase in the total renovation for the centre. We are in the process of planning the second phase which will make an even more impressive difference to the centre and make it usable to many more sections of the community.”

The centre was officially reopened by its youngest and eldest members, Grace Sharpes, aged five, and Olive Macdonald, aged 90, with Cllr Graham Heatley representing CWaC, which also coincided with the opening of the Elton Village Fete.

The fete featured traditional stalls and community fundraising activities, run by groups such as Elton Pre-school and 1st Ince and Elton Beavers.

Displays were put on for the crowds by The Coronets Majorette team and Foot Loose Academy of Performing Arts. Cheshire Fire and Rescue also entertained the children.

The Ladies and Gents Tug ‘o’ War teams fought courageously on the community field.

The evening that followed featured local stars, including top male vocalist Spike and local band Retro.
