The mayor and mayoress of Ellesmere Port visited the town’s £25m University Church of England Academy (UCEA).

Students and staff from the academy were on hand to give a proud welcome to Cllr Lynn Clare and Mayoress Mrs Jenny Bateman as they passed through its doors.

UCEA had 700 students at the time of the most recent Ofsted this spring, 147 of whom were in the sixth form.

During their visit, the mayor and mayoress met newly appointed principal Tom Hutchinson to discuss the vision and values of the academy and how these were being included and applied in everyday practice.

They also explored the purpose built landmark campus which opened its doors to the community in 2012.

Mayor's charities

During the visit, the mayor also raised her chosen charities for her year in office and supported the Macmillan coffee morning organised by the academy’s sixth form students.

Cllr Clare said: “It has been an enjoyable and informative visit to what is an excellent school for both student development and community amenities.

“It was very nice to meet with the new principal who is full of enthusiasm and ideas to drive future improvement.”

Plans to strengthen the relationship between UCEA and the mayor’s office are expected to develop over the forthcoming year through question and answer sessions with students from the academy.

Community-based projects

There are also proposals for the academy to create new community based projects linked to UCEA, the University of Chester Academies Trust and local councillors to develop new model citizens within Ellesmere Port who can help ensure success in the future.

Mr Hutchinson said “It was a great honour to welcome the mayor and mayoress to UCEA. Our central location and proximity to the civic offices encourage a close working relationship.

“It is extremely important that UCEA students understand the vital role of the mayor and local councillors and how their work supports our local communities.”
