Three terrific teenagers in the town - and a dad - are backing those less fortunate than themselves.

Forensic science student Lauren Dunbar, 18, from Little Sutton, Dad Andrew, 54, a master technician and 15 year old Year 11 Whitby High students George Greenaway and Jimmy Cardus, both from Ellesmere Port, have all teamed up to raise money for Diabetes UK.

Lauren, whose boyfriend Tom has type 1 diabetes, is doing a 120mph skydive on Saturday August 27 with dad also taking to the air above Whitchurch, north Shropshire, to make it a family affair.

Meanwhile George and Jimmy, who have been running their own online radio show every Saturday for the last three years, are extending their normal two hour slot this Saturday to round the clock.

They will be staying live from 10am on Saturday until 10am on Sunday morning to boost Lauren’s fundraising.

Ahead of her 10,000ft, almost two mile drop, Lauren, who attends West Cheshire College in Handbridge said: “The money going towards our charity is for a great reason. The diabetic clinics and scientists are trying their very best to make life for people living with diabetes better and easier. This money will go towards new technology including insulin pumps, blood monitors, blood strips and insulin pens and more support.

“My boyfriend has type 1 diabetes and seeing it first hand has made me and my family realise how hard it actually is coping with it.”

She continued: “Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with diabetes, it’s a serious, misunderstood condition that could affect five million of us by 2025 if we don’t do something about it.

“Dealing with diabetes day after day can be really hard, especially if you’re constantly reminded what could go wrong if you don’t keep control. The money that me and my Dad are raising means that people with diabetes can get the information, advice and support they need.”

At the radio show, George said: “I’ll be hosting the online 24 hour radio marathon with my friend Jimmy Cardus. It’s for charity and all the money will go to Diabetes UK.

“It takes place on August 13, starts at 10am and finishes at 10am the following day. We’re raising the money alongside Lauren.

“The show will have some guests such as BBC Radio Portsmouth presenter Luke Berry and many other people. We’re also trying to get some celebrity appearances and every hour there’ll be a different guest.”

He added: “At least 2-3 times a year we like to host 12 or 24 hour radio shows for charity. In the past we have raised £300+ for the Teenage Cancer Trust.”

Lauren has already raced to her to her £1,000 target. Further donations can be made by clicking here.

The show is broadcast on www.georgegreenaway.co.uk and on Facebook.
