Ellesmere Port families will not be forgotten this Christmas thanks to a present appeal.

The Salvation Army in the town is calling on the community to donate gifts for families in need.

The church and charity is hoping to ensure that children from Ellesmere Port wake up to presents on Christmas Day.

The Sallie Army on Whitby Road is encouraging people to add an extra toy to their shopping list so that families struggling to buy a gift for their children can make sure there is a small surprise under their Christmas tree this year.

Church leader Lt Louise Brown said: “During the festive season, when many are enjoying celebrations with friends and family, others are struggling to make ends meet.

“People from the community and organisations in Ellesmere Port will be working hard this year to make sure that your generous Christmas gifts get to those who might otherwise go without.

“The Christmas story inspires us as a church to reach out to those in need so we’re running the Christmas present appeal to ensure children in need receive a present.”

Drop off toys

People are invited to drop off a new unused and unwrapped toy for a child aged 0 to 16 years old at the Salvation Army until Wednesday, December 16.

The Army will then sort the gifts which will be distributed to children and families in the area through its own networks, local groups and social services.

Gifts can include anything from soft and educational toys for the very youngest child to games, toys and accessories for older children.

Lt Brown said: “Last year we ensured more than 300 gifts reached families in need. If you have children, grandchildren or children you support, think of what they might like in their Christmas stocking and consider buying an extra present and donating it.

“As it’s the Salvation Army’s 150th birthday this year we’re hoping this year’s present appeal will be our biggest yet.”

All donations are welcome but food items and used products are not appropriate for this appeal.

The Salvation Army in the town works throughout the year to provide compassionate support and practical help to people who are vulnerable or in need

In addition to church services every Sunday its runs clubs, a toddler group, Brownies and works in partnership with the West Cheshire Food Bank.

Lt Brown added: “We have our annual community carol service on Sunday, December 20 at 2.30pm. It will be a great festive occasion and we’d love to see you there.

“We will also be providing a Christmas Day meal for those who would otherwise be on their own. Please contact us to discuss booking a place.”
