Generous people in Ellesmere Port have rallied to raise more than £11,000 in under two weeks to give a young mum with incurable cancer and her childhood sweetheart their dream wedding.

Claire Fowler, from Ellesmere Port, recently received the devastating news that her osteosarcoma had returned after more than two years in remission.

Now she wants to make as many memories as she can with her partner Chris Carlin – with whom she has been since they were 13 years old – and their adorable four-year-old daughter Halle.

Claire, 26, told the Pioneer: “She is the love of my life and the most amazing child I could have ever asked for.

“She had to live without a mum for six months of her life as I was too ill from the chemotherapy to look after her and she was amazing all the way through my treatment.

“The scariest thought of dying is that Halle is too young to remember me.

“That’s why the GoFundMe page was set up – so I can bring my wedding forward and go on holiday to Disneyland with Halle and Chris before my treatment starts, whatever that may be.”

At the time of going to print, 482 donations totalling £11,430 had been made via their GoFundMe page – exceeding the £10,000 target.

The amount includes a £200 donation from St Mary of the Angels Primary School in Little Sutton.

Claire has praised the kindness of her neighbours: “Ellesmere Port really is incredible when it needs to be and I am so grateful that people have been so generous and understanding.”

The former Ellesmere Port Catholic High School and West Cheshire College student started to experience pain in her groin area when Halle was just four months old in 2011.

An X-ray revealed that Claire had an abnormal bone on her pelvis. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, which has spread to her lung, after undergoing scans and biopsies.

Two months of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumour and part of her pelvis and more chemotherapy followed.

After two and a half years of living with an infection in her hip, Claire started to think about finishing her social work degree at Glyndŵr University.

But she developed pain in her other hip and her back, and an MRI scan on her spine found that the osteosarcoma had returned.

“I have been told by the spinal specialist that the tumour cannot be fully removed due to the fact that it is touching other important parts of the body,” Claire explained.

“If the cancer has not spread anywhere else, he hopes to remove the majority of the tumour to prolong my life and the oncologists are still to decide what treatment is best.

“What I do know is that my cancer is now incurable.

“I hope they can prevent the disease from spreading yet so I can have longer with my beautiful daughter.”
