A brand new exhibition charting the voyage of Ellesmere Port from a bathing resort to a vibrant industrial town has opened at the National Waterways Museum.

The History of Ellesmere Port exhibition enables people to find out how the town got its name, what it was like to live and work at the port and to discover the first entertainments in the town from cycle parades to cinemas.

Through hands-on exhibits and family friendly interactive displays, the exhibition presents the Port’s rich industrial heritage according to the museum.

John Inch, museum general manager, said: “The dock was the birthplace of Ellesmere Port and the exhibition showcases how the industrial roots shaped the town, its people and its future.”

“We are inviting visitors to leave their own memories and also vote for their Ellesmere Port ‘Local Hero’.”

The exhibition has been created with valuable help from members of the Ellesmere Port Local and Family History Society and the Boat Museum Society.

It forms part of the Engage with Cheshire’s Industrial Past project which is funded by a grant from Arts Council England.

Entrance to the exhibition forms part of the admission to the museum.
