An Ellesmere Port man has appeared in court charged with the manslaughter of a 63-year-old man.

Kevin Gardner, 26, of Westminster Road,  spoke only to confirm his name and address when he appeared before Chester magistrates on Tuesday, January 7, and did not enter a plea.

The case was committed to Chester Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, January 21.

Mr Gardner, who was bailed until that date,  was charged with the manslaughter of Ronald Hayes, of Morpeth, Northumberland, on December 23, 2013.

Mr Hayes died of blunt force trauma to the head following an incident outside The Liverpool Arms in Northgate Street, Chester, in the early hours of Saturday, November 23, 2013.
