Police are appealing for witnesses following a collision which left an Ellesmere Port driver and two passengers in hospital.

The 20-year-old driver suffered serious leg injuries following the incident on the A553 Runcorn-Widnes Bridge at just after 11pm yesterday (Sunday, August 17).

The Silver Jubilee Bridge was closed for almost four hours following the collision, which involved a black Audi A3 and a blue Mini.

Firefighters from Widnes and Runcorn battled to free the driver of the Mini, who was trapped in her car after the collision, which happened when it collided with a black Audi A3 travelling in the opposite direction on the bridge.

She was taken to Aintree Hospital where she is described as being in a serious but stable condition.

Passengers in the Mini, a man and woman both 20 and from Ellesmere Port, were taken to Aintree Hospital, for treatment for minor injuries.

The driver of the Audi A3 was also treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which saw two fire engines, police and paramedics on the bridge, which was closed until 3am.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Sergeant Neil Farnworth at Cheshire police on 101, quoting incident number 978 of August 17.

Earlier that evening firefighters cut an elderly woman out of her car.

At around 6.29pm emergency services were called to Little Stanney Lane, Chester after an elderly lady became trapped in a car.

Two fire engines from Ellesmere Port attended the incident, and used cutting equipment to rescue the woman, who was treated by paramedics.
