An indefatigable fundraiser has received a police accolade for his work in the community.

Billy Birch has worked with charity organisations for over 20 years and has raised over £109,000 for a variety of good causes.

Billy, 72, of Victoria Road, Ellesmere Port, has been helping local charities in memory of his beloved wife Sylvia, who died in his arms aged 49, for over 20 years

His commitment to the cause was recognised at Cheshire Constabulary’s Achieving Excellence awards ceremony when he was the winner of the ‘Community Thank You’ Award.

Billy’s citation read: “Mr Billy Birch is a local fundraiser in Ellesmere Port and Neston.

“He has single-handedly raised thousands of pounds all of which is spent on local issues which he personally selects and works with to ensure it is spent in the right way.

“He has recently bought a considerable amount of camping equipment for a local deaf school, negotiating with a local supplier and buying the equipment personally.

“He is known by everyone locally and is often stopped in the street and handed money towards his next charitable venture.

“His energy and dedication epitomizes the community spirit within Ellesmere Port.”

Chief Constable Simon Byrne said: “These awards were designed to boost the traditional ways of recognising everyone who goes the extra mile and gives them the recognition they deserve.

“I congratulate Billy on his award, and all the work he’s done in the local community.”

Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer said: “I want to congratulate Billy on his award.

“His commitment to charity work promotes the volunteering ethic that is encompassed throughout the country.

“I hope people are inspired by him.”
