A stall offering peace of mind to pet owners popped up in the Port Arcades.

Cats Protection South Wirral Branch marked this year’s World Spay Day on Tuesday (February 23) by offering discount neutering for local cats.

The branch issued neutering vouchers at a pop-up stall opposite Argos in the shopping centre.

Cat owners in receipt of benefits and who could provide proof of this on the day received a voucher to cover the total price of neutering at an allocated veterinary practice in Little Sutton or Ellesmere Port.

Those not in receipt of benefits were asked to contribute a minimum £5 for a fixed value voucher of £40 for a female cat or £25 for a male cat and £10 for a variable value voucher worth an unlimited amount.

Volunteers from the branch were also on hand to offer information and advice.

Coordinator Janice Knox said: “According to new figures from the PDSA, just 15% of cat owners whose pets had kittens had planned for them.

“Cats can get pregnant while they are still kittens which is why we advise that cats are spayed before they venture outdoors.

“Many people believe that cats should be allowed to have a litter of kittens before being spayed, but this simply isn’t true.

“The sooner a cat has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, the sooner she can do all the things cats enjoy doing like exploring the outside world.”

She added: “Kittens can be spayed from four months.

“This not only gives her the best possible start in life but also gives owners peace of mind that they have done everything they can to ensure the welfare of their pet.”
