STEPHEN O’Brien will learn today if he has been selected to play a senior role in the historic coalition government between the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats.

The Eddisbury MP, who extended his majority by more than 13,000 votes in last Thursday’s election, is the frontrunner to be named as one of David Cameron’s Ministers of State for Health.

If Mr O’Brien, who lives near Bunbury and works from his Eddisbury headquarters in Tarporley, is successful he will be one of two serving Secretary of State for Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.

Having being confirmed as the landslide winner of the Eddisbury election during the early hours of Friday morning at Winsford Lifestyle Centre, Mr O’Brien will start his 11th year in office locally and an appointment to the Ministry of Health would be reward for his loyal public service and work in medicine.

He said: “I would love the chance to convert what I have studied and learned and implement some of my policies.

“Anyone who has experience is hoping it will be put to good use.

“In terms of my role as a member of parliament I will carry on regardless, that has to be the priority. I wish to continue to earn the confidence and trust of the people of Eddisbury.”

Mr O’Brien, who described the atmosphere among the new faces of the Tories as ‘being like the first day of school’, is also looking forward to working alongside the Lib Dems.

“It is a new style of politics that will take some getting use to but it is incumbent upon us to make sure we take this strong and stable coalition government forward and deliver what the British people want.”
