EDDISBURY MP Stephen O’Brien said he is ‘honoured’ to have been appointed a member of the Queen’s Most Honourable Privy Council.

David Cameron personally recommended Mr O’Brien in recognition of his role as Prime Minister’s Envoy and the UK’s Special Representative to the Sahel, and in tribute to his years of loyal service as MP for Eddisbury.

In future, he will be referred to as the Right Honourable (Rt Hon) Stephen O’Brien MP.

Mr O’Brien was asked by the Prime Minister to represent the UK in its quest to support the Sahel, one of the poorest regions of Africa, in October.

The MP, born in Tanzania and educated in Kenya, regularly travels to countries such as Mali and Niger to monitor UK interests in the Sahel.

The Privy Council consists of senior politicians whose role is to advise the Queen on affairs of state.

Mr O’Brien said: “I’ve had the privilege to serve my Eddisbury constituents for almost 14 years.

“I’m honoured to become a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council in recognition, for my service both in Government and Opposition, and my current role as Special Representative for the Sahel.

“I’ll continue to work tirelessly on behalf of my constituents in Eddisbury to represent their views in Parliament.”
